4 Tell-Tale Signs You Have Sensitive Skin

The term “sensitive skin” gets thrown around quite a lot. Most people assume – and wrongly so – that their skin is sensitive because it is easily irritated. In reality, however, a majority of those who claim to have sensitive skin actually don’t.

You could experience skin irritation at some point or the other due to several factors, including overuse of skincare products, the weather, and so on. But you shouldn’t consider your skin’s occasional reaction to the cold or the wrong cleanser as a red flag for sensitivity.

Although there isn’t a definitive checklist that can be used to define sensitive skin, it is often used as an umbrella term to refer to a wide range of skin conditions, ranging from rosacea to severe allergies.

So, how do you know if you have sensitive skin? There are a few signs you should look out for. Read on to know what they are.

  • Your skin is persistently reactive

If you have sensitive skin, you have probably noticed persistent reactivity to certain triggers like soaps, perfumes, skincare products, makeup products, detergents, and so on. You can also develop symptoms in response to the use of common household products like cleaners and laundry powders.

  • You are prone to rashes

When exposed to a trigger, sensitive skin may react with rashes and bumps. This is most common with the use of skincare and makeup products that are left on your skin for a long time. You can either develop rashes and bumps very quickly after contact or they may appear gradually. So, before you use any product on your skin, make sure you do a patch test on a small, discreet area.

  • You experience redness

Sensitive skin is accompanied by some amount of redness. In fact, even if you drag your finger on your sensitive skin with light to medium pressure, it will turn red. Red rashes, red bumps, and flushing are some common symptoms. Although the redness will go away if the irritant is removed, sometimes it can persist and can require additional care, including medication.

  • Beauty or skincare products sting and burn

When you apply products that are too strong for your skin, they may sting and burn. This is generally seen with products containing alcohol as well as certain acne and anti-aging products. Although the stinging and burning sensations are temporary, they can be quite uncomfortable, and sometimes, even painful. If the application of a certain product causes this issue, remove it immediately, rinse your face with cool water, and apply a soothing product that is formulated for reactive skin.

If you have noticed one or more of these signs, it is likely that you have sensitive skin.
